THE MOVIE

I met Virginia Morton on my first visit to Culpeper, Virginia, in June 2005. Randy Peck and I were walking through several buildings in downtown Culpeper when we came upon Virginia and her husband, Roger, who were entering a restaurant to have dinner. Randy introduced me and told them about our interest in transforming Culpeper and the state of Virginia.

Shortly thereafter, in July 2005, I was in Mar del Plata, Argentina, for the Harvest Evangelism Overseas Training Mission (OTM). I was one of several speakers who spoke about nation transformation through marketplace redemption. When I returned to my seat, Pastor Jorge Viamonte, vice president of the pastors’ council, told me the Lord had told him I would make a successful movie that will transform many for Christ. This was the first time I had ever heard anything from the Lord about making a motion picture. I asked the pastor if he knew that I have a son, Derek, who is a screenwriter in Hollywood. He did not.

I returned to Culpeper in late August. During this visit, Virginia Morton gave me a copy of her book, Marching Through Culpeper, with the idea that I would pass it on to my son to see if he would be interested in reading it and writing a motion picture screenplay based on it.

“You are not going to believe this,” I told her. “I just received a word from a pastor in Argentina that I would make a successful motion picture that will transform many for Christ! I believe that this word relates to the motion picture that will be made from your book.”

I took off the whole month of December, so I had ample time to read Marching Through Culpeper. As I read the book, I was struck by how the Southern perspective contained in the book is dramatically different from what I was taught in Northern schools. Could it be that there is still a huge rift between the South and the North? Could it be that this love story between a Southern lady and a Union soldier might be a catalyst to bring reconciliation between Southerners and Northerners and between European Americans and African Americans?

I discussed this with Virginia, and she said the movie would also demonstrate that God strengthens those who love Him so that they can face any adversity. In addition, she felt the movie would show the importance of character: Even though the Southerners in the story lost their material possessions, they still maintained their character, which sprang from their faith in God through Christ. The movie would also show that God answers prayers—and that passion can be controlled and sex reserved for the sanctity of marriage.

The next phase in the development of the movie came during our family’s trip to Culpeper in February 2006. Rachel and I and our two adult children, Derek and Arleigh, spent four days there, and I spoke to several pastors about my vision for transformation. I also met with Virginia Morton to brainstorm about the movie with Randy Peck and Michael Stay, as well as the rest of my family.
